Default Search Function Problem

I enter the following into a cell:
=SEARCH("fireman","fire")
and the result is #VALUE!.

Why does this happen? Shouldn't the result be 1?

The only time this function seems to work is when I type in:
=SEARCH("fire","fire")
The result in this case is 1.

I am using Mac Office 2008.

No, the result should not be 1.

=SEARCH("fire","fireman") should be 1.

The frist argument is what you want Excel to find. The second argument is where you want Excel to look. There is no "fireman" in "fire".
