Why does Excel add lines to the top and left edges of images after a reopen of a file? How can I prevent this?

These may be compression artefacts. Select a picture, then using the Picture Tools tab, go to Compress Pictures > Options and uncheck the 'automatically perform basic compression on save' option. You may have to re-insert the affected pictures.
