![]() I want to make a link from the text string newfoundland in a cell to another file. According to what I have read, I should start by selecting the text string, right-click and select LINK. However, I do not get such an option. Not even if I go via INSERT. I am doing something wrong, but what? Or is this not possible? /hans peter |

Hi and welcome,
what is the link you posted for? I did not click on it as it might be unsafe.

@ Hans Peter
Instead of posting links, please attach your sample direct to your post. You can do that via the paperclip icon on 'Advanced' posting screen. In this case, I've done it for you. @ Pecoflyer In this case it's just harmless link to a jpg image on OneDrive showing a textstring, presumably on Excel, to a Word document. Even so, it's not obvious what the issue is.

Thanks both for the quick replies. Especially to macropod who taught me things and helped me make my post understandable for pecoflyer (I hope.)
"Still, it's not obvious what the problem is." I understand that. I'll try again. I want to make a link to a file named newfoundland.docx. I highlight the word newfoundland (part of the text in the cell), right-click on the selection and this comes up. There is no Link option. Further help needed. /hans peter |

All you need to do is choose Insert>Link, then navigate to your file location and select the file.
Note: you cannot insert a link and other content into the same cell.

Sorry, Paul Edstein, I can only repeat what I wrote in my latest reply.
I highlight the word newfoundland and right-click on it. Then I get what I showed you in my last post, but no link-selection. If I right-click on the cell itself, I get what you show in your last post. But that doesn't serve me. There's something I'm doing wrong. But what? K.r. /hans peter |

You:
• do not click on the text in Excel. • cannot insert a link into a cell that contains any existing content. • should use the Insert>Link dialogue to insert the link into an empty cell.

Hi again, to make it perfectly clear. So it's not possible to make a link from a single word in a cell. As I thought you could in the same way as you can do it in Word?

You can overlay an invisible shape on the desired word.

You can, but the whole content of cell will be the text what the link displays there by default, and it will be replaced with link after it will be created. And of-course you can edit this text when in Creating Hyperlink window, and the link text displayed in cell will be changed after this.
