Date Axis on line chart includes dates with no data under them, but text axis causes data to clump

I am trying to get my line graph to not display dates that are not associated with any data. When I change the axis to a text axis (or put apostrophes in front of the dates to make them text), the graph clumps up on the left side of the graph and is just a vertical line. All axis labels are piled on top of each other. Pictures are attached. Any suggestions?
