Default Cursor positioning when creating new file

Hi all,

Whenever I create a new Excel file, I find that Sheet3 is open and the cursor is in cell C5. (There is also a Sheet1 and a Sheet2.)

Not a huge problem, obviously, but it's become very annoying. Can anyone please advise on how to make it behave normally, so that it will open with the cursor in cell A1 of Sheet1?

Thanks,
Graham

You will want to place your "template workbook" here: C:\Users\My\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTAR T (change the My to your computer name).

Automatically open a workbook template when you start Excel
You can save workbook settings that you frequently use in a workbook template, and then automatically open that workbook template every time you start Excel.

To use a workbook template, create a workbook that contains the sheets, default text (such as page headers and column/row headers), formulas, macros, styles and other formatting that you want to use every time you use the template.

Settings that can be saved in a template:

Cell and sheet formats.

Page formats and print area settings for each sheet.

Cell styles.

The number and type of sheets in the workbook.

Protected and hidden areas of the workbook. You can hide sheets, columns and rows to prevent changes to workbook cells.

Text you want to repeat, such as page, column and row labels.

Data, graphics, formulas, charts and other information.

Data validation settings.

Macros, hyperlinks and ActiveX controls on forms.

Workbook calculation options and window view options.

To create a template, do the following:

Click File > Save As.

In the Save as type box, click Template.

In the Save in box, select the folder where you want to store the template.

In the File name box, do one of the following:

To create the default workbook template, type Book.

To create the default worksheet template, type Sheet.

To create a custom workbook or worksheet template, type the name you want to use.

Click Save.

Click File > Close.

Thanks, Logit.

This only works if I create a file by opening the new template that I've created.

If I launch Excel from the taskbar, or create a new file using Ctrl + N when Excel is already open, I still get the same old problem.

Also, if I use File -> New - Blank workbook, I get a new file with only one sheet (Sheet1), with the cursor in A1. This isn't so bad.

But I normally use either the taskbar (to launch Excel) or Ctrl + N (when it's already open), and I would like it to open the new file in the normal way when I do either of these things.

Can anyone please help?

Go to the OFFICE BUTTON, upper left corner. Click EXCEL OPTIONS.

POPULAR / WHEN CREATING NEW WORKBOOKS

Make certain INCLUDE THIS MANY SHEETS is set to three.

Thanks again, Logit. It now creates three sheets when I used File -> New -> Blank workbook, which is OK.

But the main problem still remains: if I launch Excel from the taskbar, or create a new file using Ctrl + N, it opens Sheet3 with the cursor in cell C5.

By the way, I'm using Windows 10 and Office 2016. For some reason, the thread says 'Windows Vista' / 'Office XP' - I thought I'd updated my profile. I'll try to update it again.

I use Excel 2007 with Win 10

Short of re-installing Excel .. I'm not certain what else you could do.

OK - thanks. I'd rather not reinstall it to fix something fairly minor like this - I'd rather just carry on being annoyed by it .

Thanks for the suggestion. I've done a Quick Repair, and that didn't fix it. I'd rather not do an Online Repair, as (from what I can remember from last time I did it) that means a full uninstall and reinstall, which is too much trouble.
