Default EXCEL 2016 - merging multiple selected cells

Just registered on this forum and I am new to this site. If my question has been answered already, please disregard. I tried searching but did not quite get the answer I was looking for.

I am familiar with Excel in that I've used the previous versions but on this particular Excel version I am not able to select multiple cells and then merge them. Let me explain:

1> I select a group of cells by selecting two or more cells then hold ctrl and select another set of cells.
2> I click the merge & center button on the ribbon but Excel only merges the last selected group of cells only.

On the older versions of Excel I've used, you could select multiple groups of cells as described above and be able to merge them together but now I have to select one group of cells, merge them, and then select another group of cells and merge them. This is time consuming at the very least.

Thanks for any help.

I'm not familiar with multiple merges but there is generally more than one way to skin a cat. Rather than merging the cells, would it be possible to just use a formula to concatenate?
