Hello, All. I thought this would be something easily done but I'm having trouble getting a chart to work. I've used Excel lightly for 20 years but I am no expert and I have never done a chart before. I don't even know what words to use to try to search for a relevant answer, so I'm posting this.
What I have is historical market data regarding the sales of goats. The sales figures are broken into three weight bands (ranges). The data has the date the sale occurred, the weight range, and the average price (I created the weight range as a single column and the average price). At each sale there may be only animals in in one weight range or in all three weight ranges. What I want in my chart is a line that goes from the beginning of the data (back in 2002) through the present for each of the three weight ranges and which represent the average price for that weight range on that sale date. To use real data from the attached file: line #2 has a date of 4/16/2002, weight range of 70-100, and an average price of $96.50. Also, on 4/16/2002, there is a weight range of 100-140 with an average of $73.00. I'd like that to be on the chart as one line for 70-100 and another line for 100-140. Notice that the next sale date, line #4, there is only one weight range represented in the sale data. This is simply the nature of the market and shows that all animals sold in this sale were in the 70-100 range. Anyway, I appreciate your time and any help you can give me. I'm guessing this is a really basic question for someone who's done charts for a while, but I'm so inexperienced, like I said, I don't even know what search terms to use to find relevant answers. Thank you. --HC |

I kept looking around ('cause I'm obsessive) and I found this website:
http://www.exceltactics.com/building...custom-x-axis/ The example that guy gives was close enough to what I wanted that I was able to get done what I needed to get done. Hopefully that will help someone else. Thank you. --HC |

I started over, based on what I'd learned from the linked site I posted and what I saw you achieved. I was able to get basically the same thing by hitting the "Hidden and Empty Cells" button from the Select Data window. What I've not found is how to select the colors used. Thanks for your time. --HC |

Color:
Right click the green line (for example). Format Data Series. Line Color, and choose color. Similarly for other lines. Right click somewhere in the light blue area. Format Plot Area. Fill, solid fill, choose color. |
