Select for example D1. Press Ctrl and 1 to bring up the Format Cells dialog. You should see that Custom (under Category) has been chosen and that the format type is ;;;
This format type ensures that irrespective of what is entered in D1 the cell will appear blank.
This is a custom format (which I maybe should have said instead of user defined format).
