Prior versions of Excel apparently have a Convert button under File/Info. It's not there in Excel 2016. Is it now under some other menu?
Just Save As xlsx just changes the file extension. Copying to a new spreadsheet and saving that as xlsx doesn't work. |

Just tried the free converter at Zamzar.com. File was 2017 Soft.xls. Came back as 2017 Soft.xlsx --opened in Xcel as "x1000020.xls (Read-Only) (Compatibility Mode)"

Tried creating a new, blank, .XLSX file, then cut and pasted into that and saved. It opened in Xcel as "x1000021.xls (Read-Only) (Compatibility Mode)"
