AURGH
the lookup references a named range, and the 15th column in that range; howeveer, if additional columns have been added within the range <15> is no longer valid (it will still provide a result from the 15th column, but that may no longer be the correct one)... not sure what happens when columns are hidden / unhidden; but somewhere between this and the other lies the problem ! thanks all
