Can't Open Excel Spreadsheet

Hi,
after having several Excel files open, when I try to open yet another Excel file attachment then that attachment won't open. I have to close all Excel files that I currently have opened in order to open the new attachment. Does anyone know why? I use Thunderbird as my e-mail program.
