Question "There was a problem sending the command to the program."

I have Office 365. All of a sudden, when I open any Excel file, I get the message...

"There was a problem sending the command to the program."

Excel then does a file conversion and opens the file as Read Only, but I can click on "Enable Content". When I close it I'm asked if I want to save changes... I tried to do "Save As", and got the message the features were not compatible with either Excel 97 or 2003. I am (or at least I was) using Excel 2013.

Can someone tell me what's going on, and how I can fix it?

Thanks,
Janice
