Default Insert a Word Table into an Excel cell

This is a slightly different twist than I have been reading, I would like to copy a 3x3 table created in Word and insert the table into a single cell within Excel 2010. My frustration has been that the 3x3 table auto formats into 3 rows and 3 columns. Can this be done?
