Excel automatically highlights both the row reference at the left and the column reference at the top for whatever cell(s) you select.



And no, older versions didn't behave any differently. If you select more than one cell, the active cell remains unshaded, whilst the others are shaded.

There are also 3rd-party utilities that highlight the whole row & column, so the intersection is extra-highlighted.
