I should've stated that I'm using MS Office 2010. Boy, you'd think that there'd be a way to solve this problem where I wouldn't have to add narrow columns on the left and right sides of the table. But you're the first person that's come up with any solution yet. I just tried your work-around and it did the trick on the column furthest to the right, but it didn't work on the column furthest to the left. Go figure.
