How Do You Drag & Drop Cells in Excel 2010?

Default How Do You Drag & Drop Cells in Excel 2010?

I found in several places on the web, the solution to my inability to drag & drop cells in Excel 2010. The steps to take seemed easy enough to follow:



_Go to Excel Options
_Click Advanced
_Check the box to the left of "Enable fill handle and cell drag and drop" and below it, check the box to the left of "Alert before Overwriting Cells."
_Click OK
_Close and Restart Excel

I then attempt to move a cell that I've clicked onto by moving my cursor to the corner of the cell until it changes to a small thin cross. I've gone through these steps several times, but to no avail. The cell doesn't move to where I attempt to drag and drop it to. It simply duplicates itself in the cell immediately below where the original cell is.

What can I do to drag and drop a cell to another spot on the worksheet?

Try unchecking the 'After pressing Enter, move selection' option.

PS: There should be no need to re-start Excel for either option to take effect.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your speedy response. I followed your advice. In doing so, I discovered what the real problem was......................ME!

I was moving the cursor to the border of the cell until the wide cross became a small thin cross. Then, I tried in vain to drag and drop the cell. I learned by accident that in order to execute the drag and drop, I must move the cursor to the border of the cell as before, but don't start dragging till I see 4 arrows pointing up, down, left & right.
Then, it works! In all of the web explanations that I'd read, I never spotted this little difference!

And just to add a not so well known trick, if you drag and drop ( as you explained) while holding down the RIGHT mouse button, when you've dropped the selection a menu will appear with some interesting features. I leave it to you to discover them if you're interested
