I'm not sure what you mean by:

but some external references only ever update correctly when the source file is open. It might also be worthwhile checking the link update settings. If you add the 'Edit Links' button to the QAT, clicking on that, then 'StartUp Prompt' will reveal whether Excel is set to update them.
