Sequential document numbering excel'97

Hi,

I have generated workbook in excel '97 that is a template for generating Invoices.
I really need each separate invoice to have its own number printed.
Is it possible to automate this process so every time I prepare an invoice, it has the next number in the series printed on it? If I can get this problem worked out, I can include in several documents to allow cross referencing
