First, don't shoot the messenger(s)!
Second, AutoSave is new to Word, relatively, and only functions with cloud storage.
The AutoRecover function is a very different thing and has been around for more than a decade.

For many of us who work with long and complex documents, we want to be able to decide when to save. Graham also has a versioning software Add-In for those who want various versions.
Save in two places
These are functions that have never been available in Word out-of-the-box.
And, yes, Microsoft could be a lot clearer about this than it is.
