Word replacing accented letters in document being edited with track changes
Hi everyone,
Really glad to have found this forum! I'm alternately scratching my head and worrying about this. I'm editing a 450-ish-page manuscript in Word. The manuscript is in English, but it contains a lot of French words with diacritics, most of which I'm adding in at this editing stage -- i.e. they're being flagged as additions, because I have track changes on. I'm adding them to appear in italics, in case that makes any difference. I've just taken a look back toward the beginning of the document, and noticed that a lot of these words that involve diacritics have been scrambled somehow -- the accented letters have been replaced with completely different letters. This is obviously a long document, that I've been opening and closing for a few weeks now, and I don't know when this happened, but I know that those aren't the letters I entered. Does anyone have any idea what's going on, and whether I can fix it? It's a .docx file that was originally produced by someone else, who sent it to me (as a .docx) to edit, and I've renamed it since I received it. Really hoping there's someone who can shed some light on this! Thanks so much for reading. |

Is the scrambling consistent? and did the file originate on a Mac or a PC? I've seen similar (and decidedly unwanted) behaviour when moving multi-language files between platforms, but not (yet) had to nail the exact cause of and remedy for the problem.
