Word template confusion
Hi there,
I know how to create a template in MS Office 2007 (Create some document and save it as a template) for future use. I'm just confused as to the benefits of saving it as "a template". Why couldn't I save it as a normal document? It can also be used in the future, can't it? Thanks for your time. |

It is safer to have a "clean" template as a starting point. When you Save As on a document there will be many edits transferred from one document to the next which might eventually lead to corruption.

Thanks for your reply. I mean I've noticed that if I open a template, make some changes and hit Ctrl+S, it'll force me to save as... and thus preventing overwritting the template. When working with a normal document (treated as a template), the same situation would automatically save the changes in the original 'template' document. In this respect I can see the benefits of saving as a template.
Are there any other? |

Those would be the top two reasons: avoiding corruption and avoiding overwriting a "template" which is actually a document.

Thanks. It makes sense and I can see the benefits of it. I guess I thought there would be more to it but these are good enough reasons to use templates.

Thinking about it, you can easily think of other advantages as well. For example, a template can store reusable blocks of text, called Building Blocks in Word 2007/2010 (previously called AutoText, which is now a subcategory of Building Blocks). Documents being used as template can't store these items.

Building Blocks can contain anything that a Word document can contain: text, graphics, tables, text boxes, and so on. They let you reuse specific content.
