Scrolling hassle
Hi folks,
I've been massively annoyed with a Word 2007 problem for years now, and I'm on the verge of migrating to Open Office if I can't solve it (the problem does not exist there). I like to set my cursor and scroll position at a particular point in a document before minimizing the window, but when I later restore the window, I have to re-scroll the document back to where I want it each and every time! It never stays where I put it! Word 97 and Word 2000 didn't have this problem. No matter where I left the scroll position of a document, it would always restore to that exact same location--whether or not the cursor was positioned there. I like to open two windows for the same document so I can use each window to edit or reference other portions of the document. I find this endless need to re-scroll for the position I last left the document at to be extremely disruptive to my work flow. Disruptive to the point where, after a while, I just want to throw my computer out the window and get a job driving truck or something. Maybe I wouldn't find it so disruptive if it always worked this way. But, to my knowledge, this problem was only introduced in Word 2007 and was never an issue in any previous incarnation of Word. This problem also does not exist in Open Office, which always restores a minimized document to the exact position I left it at. Has anyone else found this problem an annoyance? Has anyone figured out a way to get Word to correctly remember a window's scroll position? Just how on earth would it actually forget it???? |

Hi wornways,
Your description suggests you might be closing the wrong window.

I solved the problem. The most experienced hard-core veteran user or supporter of Word would never have guessed it in a million years it's so ridiculous. It's definitely a problem with Word itself, but I found a way to work around it and get my scroll positions to be remembered.

For some reason, when I open the "Zoom" dialog box and select the "Text width" radio button, Page Layout view mode ceases to be capable of keeping track of scroll position between minimizing and restoring the window. However, if I just click once on the down triangle in the "Percent" box after clicking on the "Text width" radio button, reducing the magnification by one percent, Page Layout view mode magically becomes able to keep track of scroll locations.
So I suppose I can't just rely on "Text width". I'm going to have to pop the zoom percentile down by one percent. Another odd Microsloth bug... |
