Default How to Restore Page Margin Page Number Styles in Word 2010

Hello there,

As I was making a Word 2010 template, I deleted the default Page Margin Page Number styles (only available in the Design tab-->Page Numbers-->Page Margins menu when the cursor is in the header or footer).

I removed all styles and created my own, and I thought I had saved my styles to the normal template but they were not available in other documents, so I must not have. Now I am unable to retrieve the defaults or create new Page Margin numbering styles.

I'm guessing the users will still have access to their defaults but I would still like to create my own basic style for them to insert page numbers on landscape-oriented pages. The only option I have in the Design->Page Numbers->Page Margins menu is "More Page Numbers from Office.com" which does not provide options anyway.

I would like to either (a) restore the original page margin numbering styles so that I can edit them or (b) be able to create new Page Margin numbering styles even if I cannot restore the originals.

I am running Windows 7 Home and Office 2010 (I think premium edition but don't remember).

I have tried deleting and restoring the normal template in the following directory:

C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

I have also tried deleting and restoring the Built-In Building Blocks.dotx template at:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\Document Parts\1033\14

I have also tried creating a new Page Margin Page Number style (by saving a selected page number as a new style from the Design Tab, Page Margins menu), but although that did save a new style in the Design->Page Margins menu, clicking on it still just inserted a page number in the header or footer.

I want to avoid using manual textboxes to create the Page Margin page numbers because they come out fuzzy and do not automatically update with the numbering scheme.

Any assistance with solutions a or b or both would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your time and brain power!

Rocky

sorry for not mentioning the cross-post.

as another attempted solution, I was exploring the styles manager for page number styles. I only see one (page number) in the style manager, but it does not appear that this will lead to a solution. Perhaps the page margins page-number style is somewhere in the style manager?

I don't think that approach will lead to a solution, as the typical requirement for headers & footers in landscape pages in documents with a portrait layout is for the header & footer content to remain on the short sides. For that, the header & footer content has to be rotated. The usual way of achieving that is described at:

What you might be able to do is the create a Quick Part based on the above. However, see:

interesting material, but not really what i'm looking for here because the users might create new landscape pages at any point and want to insert page numbers there..

Default solution!

okay...i've got it.

Steps to Create New Page Margin Page Number Style (that actually shows up in the page margin)

1. In the body of a page, insert a text box. Format it as you want (in my case I put it in the left margin of a landscaped page, rotated it, turned off the border and shading, and centered it vertically between the top and bottom margin using the page gridlines as a guide).

2. Put the cursor inside the text box, go to the Insert tab, click Page Number, Current Position, and insert a plain page number. (do not just manually type in a number, use the insert page number at current position instead). Format your page number font and position as needed for your case.

3. Click on the border of your text box to select the text box (don't select the page number, rather the actual text box). You might have to click once inside the text box to see the border if you have removed the border, as I did. With the textbox selected, go to the Insert Menu, Page Number, Page Margins, and choose Save Selection as Page Number (Margin). Name it whatever you like, and at the bottom of the window, choose whether you want to save it just in your current document or in the normal template to make it available to all documents. In my case I saved it to the normal template.

Note that you will not be able to create a new page margin page number style if you just insert a page number in a normal header or footer and save that selection as a page margin style, so follow these steps above instead. Perhaps Word actually does use text boxes to create the page margin page numbers because this solution worked better than I thought it would. You should be able to insert a page number in the page margin with your new style either from the Insert or Design tabs.

Not sure how many people will be in this situation but hope it helps someone in the future.
