Default Referencing a Captioned Picture

I am using pictures with captions (caption example: "FIGURE 21") in a set of instructions. The captions are important because they allow me to reference a picture in the text of my instructions. For example, in describing a application screenshot I might say, "See Figure 21." The caption function in Word is also very helpful because all of the caption numbers automatically adjust if I insert a captioned picture in the middle of my document. I do not have to change all of the caption numbers manually to make space for the new Picture. But this also creates a problem which I am hoping someone can make a suggestion about. The reference to the caption number in the text of my instructions does not automatically change if the caption number changes. So, even though all of the picture captions adjust to make space for the new picture, the reference in the body of my instruction do not and I must manually go through the document, find those references and change them.

Does anyone know of a way to link references of the captioned image to the actual caption? This way if the caption was to adjust for a newly added picture the reference would also adjust with it.

Thanks for the ideas
