Word 2007 won't let me open or save documents!
Hello,
I just installed Office 2007 on my computer. When I create a document in Word and try to save it (either using the icon or going to File>Save As), the computer returns that ominous "beep" and does nothing else. The dialog box won't open up. When I go to File> Open the dialog box won't open as well. Surprisingly, I don't have this problem with Excel. That program works just fine. When I start Word in safe mode, it works fine! This is what I've already tried to do, with no success: 1) uninstall/reinstall 2) delete the Normal.dotm (this helps temporarily until I restart) 3) run the Repair function 4) recycle all my tmp files 5) tried removing my add-ins (there were no addins that I saw) 6) removing other programs like Adobe that might cause a conflict 7) banging my head against the wall Please help! |

The fact that things work in Safe mode suggests that the problem is with the registry, with Normal.dotm, or with an add-in. Try deleting the Data key or the whole Word key in the registry, then try renaming Normal.dotm, and finally troubleshoot add-ins, as discussed in the article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541/en-us/ (How to troubleshoot problems that occur when you start or use Word 2010, Word 2007, Word 2003, or Word 2002).

no luck :(
Hi Stefan,
I tried all those things, to no avail. I think it has something to do with a bad Normal.dotm file creator. If I delete the Normal file and start Word, it will work fine. If I exit and then restart Word again, the problem resurfaces. As I said earlier, I don't have any problems with saving files in Excel, just Word. I don't know if this helps, but I used to have Word 2003 on this machine and had no problem with it. Any other thoughts? Anybody? |

When you uninstalled (or upgraded) Word 2003, did you also delete Normal.dot? If Word 2007 or 2010 finds an older version, it will use that file as the basis for Normal.dotm. In other words, if the old template is corrupt, so may the new one.

I tried that...
Hi Stefan,
Thanks for the reply. When I deleted the Normal.dotm file, I did see an old version of the 2003 normal.dot. I deleted that as well. It did not solve my problem. Thanks |

I believe you will have to reconsider add-ins. Did you look at both global templates and COM add-ins?

Hi Stefan,

If you see the same things as discussed earlier in this thread, and the troubleshooting didn't give any results, make sure that you have the proper access rights to the user templates folder (where the Normal template resides).

Word 2007
Hi Stefan,
Thank you for your help with this. I really appreciate it. I am logged in as administrator. I even tried deleting the Template folder, copying and pasting from another computer where Word works as it should with no success. |

Have you tried creating a new profile?
How i solved the problem was to backup my profile on the PC then delete it, once i had done this i re-created my profile by logging in and everything worked. Dont know exactly what the problem was, but it seemed to be user\profile specific, so recreating the profile did the job. |

Indeed, sometimes that's all you can do (overkill as it may seem initially).
