You will find the check boxes under Content Control on the Developer Tab.
If the Developer Tab is not showing, right click anywhere on the ribbon and choose customize ribbon. In the customize ribbon dialog box check the Developer Tab and click ok.

Thanks, Julie. I did find the developer tab. I have a template document with check boxes that need to be checked or unchecked. When I put the cursor on these, the check box icon on the developer tab is grayed out. So what I need to be able to do is check or uncheck already existing boxes.

Do you have the restrict editing icon highlighted which is also on the Developer Tab. The existing form might be restricted. Click on that icon to allow editing.
