Default Adobe Garamond Pro...font crash?

I've been trying to figure this out in Word 2007 and 2010. Every so often, I'll open a document and all the text using Adobe Garamond Pro will have changed to what looks like Times New Roman. Perhaps that's the default font when there's a problem, like a kind of safe-mode font. The font box says the text is Adobe Garamond Pro, but the displayed text is not. All other fonts look as they should. Usually in Win-7 I can remove/reinstall the font and that fixes it. But I'm on a Win-XP box and that's not working.

Also, if this helps; almost every time I add a header/footer to a document, the Adobe Garamond Pro font crashes and the body text gets completely messed up. But, I can save the doc, close all instances of Word, and the doc looks normal including the new header/footer. It's a workaround that I can live with, but I'd really like to know what's going on. Is it a know issue with Word or possibly the actual font file I've been using. I don't have another copy of Adobe Garamond Pro to test.

<edit>
When I save a doc in Word97/2003 format (.doc) the font is displayed correctly on the screen. And when I re-open the same doc, saved in Word2007 format (.docx) it's trashed.
