Default Why does the text refuse the styles ?

I am trying to build a Table of Contens for a really long text (250 pages, app. 65 chapters) but the titles of the chapters are in the middle of the first sentence :

"If this would be the sentence THE TITLE WOULD BE ONLY THIS and then the text goes on"... etc etc

so I define "THE TITLE WOULD BE ONLY THIS" as heading I and leave the rest as "Normal"

but when I go back and upadate the Table in page 1 he assumes the WHOLE sentence is Heading 1...! I select "If this would be the sentence" and apply "Normal" but nothing changes !!!!

This happens in every chapter of course, so my table of contents is simply not working.

What to do ?

Thank you!
Joana

ps. in the image attached only "A Descida à Cave" is HEADING 1 but he assumes the WHOLE sentence as title...

Default In-sentence headings

Hi, joanajoana. Your problem lies in the nature of paragraph styles. By definition, a paragraph style is applied to an entire paragraph. Thus, Word is picking up more than you thought you had included in your style.

Although I haven;t tried it out in this case, I believe that what you need is a little-known Word tool called the Style Separator. you can add it to your Quick Access Toolbar by going into your Options, selecting Customize, then All commands from the drop-down at upper left, and scrolling down to the Style Separator. Select it and click on Add.

If you have your hidden characters showing, which I recommend, it will appear as a symbol comprising two paragraph marks. You'll need one before the heading text and another after it. This will allow you to style the previous and following text in your text paragraph style, and your heading in your heading style.

Hope this helps.

Best,
Ulodesk

Dear Ulodesk

Sorry to be so unskilfull at this but neither I could see any specific marks when I go to Preferences > View > show all
nor could I find anything related to styles in my Tools > Customize > All Commands

I followed these instructions : http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/sty...t-t879312.html
but in my version it simply isnt there as "insertstyleseparator" nor "StyleSeparator" even...

Im using Word X for mac - could this be the reason why ?

thanks
joana
