Hi all -

When I open a big file, it says "not responding" in the top of the window. After a second or two, it starts responding again.



This is very annoying because I usually have a few Word windows open, and when a newly opened file stops responding like I wrote above, when it does start responding, it is not the active, fore, window, rather it's behind the other Word windows.

I am using Win 7 32 bit, with MS Office 2007, with all updates installed. A clean re-install of Office did not solve this problem.

Any ideas?

Is it the same document causing problems or is it when you open any large document?

Any large document.

If it's struggling with opening large files it could be a system memory problem. Are you running a lot of background problems that are hogging your RAM?

I have 2gb of ram, and I have very few background programs running. Just standard Windows processes, and a few from iTunes. Usually less than 50 percent of the physical memory is used.

Then I'm out of ideas, sorry.

That's a bummer. This issue is really bothersome.

But why would it be the ram? The files I'm using are hundreds of pages long, but they are basically just text, and each file is less that 1 mb...

Is it wort upgrading to 4 gig ram?

The 'not responding' message is fairly normal for large documents, especially if they're complex and you only have 2GB RAM on Win 7 with Office 2007.

Well, at "hundreds of pages long", Word is going to require some time to do the pagination. If you switch to draft view and turn background pagination off, the files will likely load faster. Increasing the amount of RAM may help too (it certainly won't do any harm), but the fact your PC only has 2GB suggests it pre-dates both Word 2007 and Windows 7 and may already be pushing the CPU a bit.
