Question Disappearing Style

I have a Word template that was originally created in Word 2003 and has been converted to Word 2007.

The original included a "Bullet" style that was basically a multilevel list with bullets instead of numbers. I realize that Word 2007 handles bullet formatting somewhat differently, but even after conversion, selecting the "Bullet" style would still format text correctly.

The only problem is that the "Bullet" style has stopped appearing in the style list for some documents based on the template.

It still exists, because Word 2007 won't let me try to recreate it, but I can't find a way to make it reappear in the Styles window.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Try this first

In the Styles Group click on the little arrow in the right hand corner and select the Manage Styles icon at the bottom. Find the style and click on modify, check the Add to Quick Style List and choose the New Document Based on This Template option. If already added to Quick Style List look in Recommended Tab, if greyed out click on show.

I actually have tried that, but "Bullet" doesn't show up in the Manage Styles window, either.

Correction, I created a new blank document from the template and found "Bullet" in the Manage Styles window, but the Modify Style window for it does not show the Add to Quick Style List checkbox.

Upload your template, sometimes it's easier to give an opinion or advice when we have the problem in front of us.

Are you saying that the "Add to Quick Style list" option is greyed out or is it missing completely?

I agree with Julie: this is one of these cases when you would want to take a look at the template directly.

Here's an example document created from the template.

OK, I see that "Bullet" is a list style, which explains why it can't be added to the Quick Style list; only character and paragraph styles are allowed in the style gallery. You can apply a list style from the "List Styles" area at Home tab | Multilevel List | List Styles.

I see your problem. The style is Body, with list options (Bulletts and Numbers). I suspect it has to do with the built in styles within Word. Although you can delete body, bullett and number in the styles in the document. However you can modify these. As it would only be in that document it shouldn't cause problems in other documents in Word.

I'm sure Stefan will be able to confirm this or explain the reasons why it would not be advisable to do so.

Your best option would be to create new styles for your bullett/numbered lists.

If I was to be using these styles all the time, I would probably start the style name with bullett as default sorting in the styles is Alpha.

As I can see you have created styles yourself in the document there is no need to explain how to do it.

I would suggest looking at these two websites.

For Bulletts
www.shaunakelly.com

For Styles
http://www.karlencommunications.com/...leSetsWord.pdf
(I learnt alot from this when I was doing my ITQ Level 3).

I have learnt something new about Word today and shall be editing my default bulletts and exporting them to all my templates!

Good Luck

Indeed, if Quick Styles and Quick Style sets should work properly across different documents, list styles can't be used. It would be required to link bullet (or numbering) formatting to paragraph styles which can then be added to a Quick Style set. To apply the bullet, apply the paragraph style. If you are working with single-level (bulleted or numbered) lists, set up the list formatting directly in the Modify Style dialog box. You can see how this is done in the built-in List Bullet style.

A better approach in cases such as this one is to create a template with the styles set up and avoid using the Quick Styles feature. You should then follow the instructions at http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...g20072010.html.
