Default Template or Driver Fault

Good Morning Don,

Usually when a document number increases by one, you are using a template file rather than a document file? If the file type has yellow at the top of the icon then this is a template file. Open the document, click on file save as, but at the bottom change the file type to 'Word Document'.

I'm sure you're aware of the above, therefore it must be a driver fault which is a little more difficult to track down. When using safe mode it limits the amount of drivers that word will use. Have you recently installed a new program? It may be that this driver is affecting the way that Microsoft Word works?

To stop drivers from loading, you will have to stop and start several to find out which one is causing the problem, try the following information…

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/d....mspx?mfr=true

Hope this helps.

The documents are not templates. It I attempt a Save As it immediatly returns to the document. If I attempt a Save it aldo reurns to the document and does not save. I am not aware of any programs recently installed except for the common updates. Thanks for your reply, Don

Hi Don,

Sorry I cannot be of any more assistance. It maybe best to remove office/word from your complete system, then reboot and then reinstall.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

Nothing workd so I called Microsoft Activation Help . After giving control of my compuer to them they removed the Registry settings for Office, removed Office and reinstalled. It did not solve the probem and the symptoms were that Excel and Access were fine, but when opening a Word Document the header indicated in the header someting about not activated. However, using File | Help in Word showed Office as Activated. The Microsoft person then added a new User to my system and while booted to the new User uninstalled add reinstalled Office. That solved the problem. I have idea why! Don

Hi Don,

Pleased that you have managed to get it sorted, even if you had to phone Microsoft themselves. Thank you for letting me know the solution, as I now appreciate that it is probably a failed user account. I will bear this in mind for the future.

Please be kind enough to mark this as 'solved' - thanks.

After much searching, I discovered the problem was my permissions for the Word default save folder somehow had lost the Full Control and Modify permissions (they were no longer checked). I have no idea how this suddenly happened. Apparently the Microsoft Support person did not suspect that was the problem. He got around it by generating a new User and reinstalling Word while logged on to the new User. This created a new default save folder with the necessary permissions. As soon as I deleted the new User the problem had returned and it took a long time to discover what had mysteriously happened. Don
