600 page document in word 2007
Hello-
I am starting a project where we are going to re-write a 600 page document that contains around 500 graphics. I haven't done a document that large in word 2007 before and was wondering if there are any opinions or guidance on word 2007's ability to handle a document that big. We also work in a distributed environment with several authors. We are also looking at framemaker as a solution but don't want to if word can handle it. Thanks for your feedback! |

I am working on a 310 page document with over 500 images and word 2003 or above seems to handle it ok. In retrospect I wish I had used some other program that wasn't so retarded, but here I am.
I guess as a test you can make 10 mock pages each with an image, and copy/paste it 60 times and see what happens. If your computer doesn't set on fire, it's probably OK |

For cross-posting etiquette, please read http://www.excelguru.ca/node/7 As answered at tech support forum: Word can certainly handle a single document of that size - provided the final file size is less than 512MB. Even so, you might find the performance particularly sluggish with such a large document. You might find it better to break the document into separate portions that can be amalgamated for final printing/publishing (eg via INCLUDETEXT or RD fields). With multiple authors, each responsible for a different portion, that also increases productivity.

600+ page Word document
The largest Word document I've created was 1,267 pages compiled from multiple sources and formats. It used all 9 levels of numbered headings and contained ~350 graphics and over 400 tables. The final file size of 28MB was achieved by using a Photoshop script to reduce color images to 128 color gifs at exactly 110 dpi. Scrolling response was a bit slow in print view, but otherwise it was fine. After initial authoring, 6 others edited the content with no problems.
