Word can certainly handle a single document of that size - provided the final file size is less than 512MB. Even so, you might find the performance particularly sluggish with such a large document. You might find it better to break the document into separate portions that can be amalgamated for final printing/publishing (eg via INCLUDETEXT or RD fields). With multiple authors, each responsible for a different portion, that also increases productivity.
