I am running Word 2007. When I attempt to save a document or when I try to open a document, it is very slow to open the folder. Let me explain.



I click on save as. The folder view opens pointing to the last used location -- usually My Documents. If I save there everything is ok.

If I want to save in a different folder, I might click on the C drive. It may take 1-2 minutes for that view to display. If I then click on a folder on that drive, it may take 1-2 minutes for that view to display. As I click down the path, each step takes 1-2 minutes to display.

The same happens if I am trying to navigate to a folder in order to open a document.

This is not caused by Word or Outlook, your Windows Explorer should be very low too. Open 'My Computer', disconnect the drivers which are not available, such as network drives.

Thanks Kevin. That took care of the issue. So simple. I had put up with that for many months.

I do have a question. Why does Word [and other MS products] exhibit this behavior while other applications [i.e. Wordperfect] does not?

They use different programming techniques to bring up the folder dialog, and Office happens to be poor in this case.

WordPerfect is very old and also available on non-Windows system, it should have been coded quite differently.

When we switched to MS Word from Wordperfect, everyone in my office HATED it!!! It never worked very well, and is so cumbersome to use. I was hoping Word 2007 would be an improvement over Word 2002 which is what I have been using.
