Question Need to remove a line that isn't a cell border

I'm preparing a pretty long document - in column/table format but I don't think that's relevant here

Anyway, while I was doing it in draft sometimes I put a "line" after some text to show that it was different to what was above or below it.

I did the "line" by taking the "-" symbol and holding it for a while and then hitting "return" ....... and then a line was drawn that was almost across the width of the column - not quite the width so not like a "normal" border that you can use if you've set up your table this way.

Anyway, I'd like to remove the "lines" but it's proving to be impossible.

Everything I've tried won't work - what happens is

- the line remains
- if i delete the blanks hoping to delete it too then all it does is shift the line up or down.

Now not only can't i get rid of a line, but it's also now right on the border of a table cell so I can't even move the line "upwards" off the border because there's no "space" after the line to put the cursor.

Hope this makes sense - basically it's about how to remove a line that isn't a cell border

Thanks

Default Hidden autoformat function

Don't ya love it? The ever helpful Word has auto-formatted a border, assuming that that's what you wanted (well, you did, sort of). Therefore, to remove it, you have to find the text or possibly full paragraph to which it is attached, open the Borders dialogue, and remove the border.

Sometimes, depending on how it got started, it may seem to jump around a bit when you think you've deleted it. Try selecting more lines/paragraphs, and/or entering a blank line above or below first, then removing the border.

You can prevent this from happening in the future by opening Word options/Proofing/Autocorrect/Autoformat as you type, and unchecking the box that says Borders.

Best,
Ulodesk

Question

Thanks Ulodesk - I changed the options so it won't happen again.

In the meantime I can't take the border off.

I'd already done what you suggested - and when I put on "no border" what it does is transfer the border to the top of the highlighted "returns" .....

So in other words the border just changes location.

Any other suggestions??

Thanks

Without seeing the issue, it's a little difficult. Try this: Turn on hidden characters (I don't remember where this is in 2003; Shift+Ctrl+8 should toggle hidden characters on and off, or it may be in View/Hidden Characters). Place your cursor in the highest paragraph that you think might have the border attached, open the borders dialogue (Alt+O,B is the keyboard shortcut), and see if a border is showing. If so, click none. If not, check the next paragraph.

You can also try selecting a number of suspect paragraphs adn see what the borders dialogue says. If one of them has a border, you should see a wide gray band instead of a black line in the dialogue diagram. Click None.

Does that do it?

Best,
Ulodesk.

Thanks for those - I'd already done those things and they didn't work. Tried again just to be sure but didn't work.

What I've decided to do is

- copy the (long) contents of the cells from the cell above the problem to the cell below it - so 3 cells .......
- paste it unformatted on another blank sheet
- then delete the 3 rows (with all the text still on it ....... everything in it)

....... then hopefully the line will go too........

Then all I have to do is create 3 new table rows and start pasting without formatting and doing a LOT of reformatting of the contents. Oh well.

I'll do it tomorrow.

Hopefully I won't have any problems ..... (fingers crossed)

Thanks for the help though - at least I know that it's not something crazy. I'm pretty good using Word so I couldn't work out what the issue was.

I've also stopped it happening again by switching off the automatic lines. ;-)
