I am using Word 2003/SP3 with Windows 7.
Sometimes when I try to open a word document, I am prompted "The command cannot be performed because a dialog box is open"
I click OK, and underneath is a 2nd prompt saying "word automatically saved changes to the normal document template. do you want to change it? Yes/No

Also when I try to close a word file it takes ages, and then comes up with "not responding" - and eventually prompts - "The normal file already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?"
Then usually comes up with - "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working - Windows is checking for a solution to the problem"

And so it goes on and on - most frustrating.
I have looked for solutions on the web - none seem to fit my problem exactly.



Can anyone please help me?

Your issues may be down to the fact that the document you are working on may have differences to entries in the Normal template settings and that is why it is prompting you to save changes to the Normal Template.

Two suggestions which may help:
1. When you saved the document and are prompted to save changes - select yes to all.
2. Look for a fresh clean copy of the Normal template and re-load it.
