Default Spelling/Grammar check on a novel

I tried Googling this problem and could find nothing.

I'm trying to spell/grammar check a 200,000 word document done in Word 2002. You cannot do it all in one day. I was amazed to learn that Word seems unable to retain a record of items I told it to ignore. I cleared fifty pages or so of F7 questions, and when I went back a week or so later, it began to bring up some of the same problems I had already cleared. I don't believe telling it to "Ignore All" is the answer. What if I tell it to "ignore all" fragments, and then F7 retains my selection, virtually nullifying the grammar check.

You'd think there would be a selection for "Ignore all future occurrences of this specific problem on this particular page."

Strangely enough, I tried a test: the exact document, side by side (different name). When I told Word to ignore a problem on one document, it ignored it on the other one as well. So I was afraid to test "ignore all" on either document.

Best solution so far is to make a note of the page I was on when I quit the F7 check for the day. This is not an ideal solution.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Default Language

This may or may not work for you purposes, but you can select whatever you like, open the language dialogue, and check the "Do not check spelling or grammar" box. This is reversible, by selection, i.e., reopen the document, select one paragraph or 1,000, and un-check the box to have Word highlight errors within the selection (as long as a language remains selected).

Best,

Your suggestion is a good one. Looks like it will work. If it doesn't I'll report back. Meanwhile, I found a good explanation of check and RECHECK (!) functions here:

http://www.melbpc.org.au/pcupdate/22...8article10.htm

According to this, all "ignores" are stored with the document until you use recheck. I'm not getting that on fragments, but I will use the above suggestion of blocking text. "Ignore All" scares me.

Okay, some answers. Blocking large segments of text doesn't work because when you have to stop to make an edit, the block goes away.

I learned something I didn't know, however. If you place the cursor within the document and hit F7, spell/grammar check will take over FROM THAT POINT AND MOVE FORWARD. There seems to be some memory function at work, because you can close Word, reopen it, and it seems to remember that you told it to ignore previous fragments. I know at some point this stops working and it will ask you about the same fragments you already told it to ignore (in my defense, they are usually in quotations.)

So the answer I will use is to remember where I stopped checking on a given day, return to that point later, put the cursor in the document and proceed from there.
