Default How to fully justify columns

I'm trying to type up a one page phone list.

The format is three columns.

I want to type the name, add some dots and end with the phone number like this:

Fred ..................471-0000
Barney ...............471-0001

To show the example I just typed in the 'periods' one after the other and then added the phone number.

But when I add many many names the list doesn't right justify as it does in this example.

How do I fully justify the columns and still add the 'periods' between the name and the phone numbers?

Thanks for your interest.

What application are you using?

Hi, macropod

I'm using MSWord

Eons ago I think someone told me that there is a combination of keystrokes that will space out the 'periods' so that the lines fully justify. But maybe it was a different program

Hi empressive,

Delete your existing periods and insert a tab between the name and number. Then, on the Ribbon's Home tab, use Paragraph > Tabs to define a right-aligned tab with a dot leader a suitable distance (eg 2in/5cm) from the name.

Thanks for your advice.

I'm doing something wrong.

I went into to paragraph> tab and chose right align and 2...... and OK

But when I try to implement it the dots don't show up...although it aligns as it should.

What am I missing?

Hi empressive,

It works for me. I suggest confirming that it was the dot-leader option you checked.

I'm still messing up!

I'll try to explain what I've done so maybe you can see what it is I'm doing wrong.

The page is set to three columns with 1 cm margins all round.

The tab stop position is set at .5cm
The default tab is set at 1 cm
The alignment is set at 'right'
I chose the dot leader (which is the #2 option)
I clicked 'Set'
Then 'OK'

When I type a name and then tab no dots show up before the phone number.

What should I REALLY be doing?

Set the paragraph alignment as <left>
On a blank line set a tab stop at the right margin with a dot leader.
Type "Barney" then press the tab key then type the phone number.

I have attached a sample of the tab dialog box and the end result.

Hi empressive,

What you're doing seems OK.

See attached. Do the dot leaders show up? If not you may have a faulty display driver, in which case you should check for updates from the maker's website.

It's working!
Thank you Macropod and thank you Topham

I'm an old lady who's taking a run at 80. I bought my first computer in 1982 when IBM came out with their first PC. (Nowadays there's more memory in my watch!) In those days there were dozens of word processing packages and none of them were in the least intuitive and I had to memorize a bazillion keystrokes. When things became standardized I got incredibly lazy and only learn things on a need to know basis.

Anyway, thanks for helping me over this particular hurdle.

From one granny to another - good on you! Your computing background seems similar to mine but I'm still working with them so this stuff is still top of mind for me. Keep up the good work!
