Default Header, Footer and Page # Galleries Disappear - Word 2010

The pre-set drop down galleries for choosing formats for headers, footers and page numbering are gone. The only items in the drop-downs are Edit, Remove and More Online. There may be other galleries missing, but these are the only three that I use.

I have been using them, esp footer and page #, constantly for well over a year. I have Office 2010 on Windows 7.

Has anyone ever heard of this before? Any suggestions?

Thanks very much for your help.

Joann

I am making some progress, but not there yet.

The galleries are supposed to be in Building Blocks files. I find four different variations of these files in my system:

Two are called Building Blocks.dotx and are in my User area. When opened, these do not have the galleries and show the same view I am getting in all of my documents right now.

Two are called Built In Building Blocks.dotx. One is in Programs and one is in User. When opened, both show the galleries and are the same view I have always gotten in Word before they disappeared.

So now I guess I have a more targeted question: How do I get my normal word documents to use the Built In Building Blocks.dotx files - to see and hook up with them. This has to be simple, but I'm not seeing it. The two files look fine and show the galleries when I click on them directly.

thx

J

1. The predefined built-in building blocks entries that ship with Word2007 are stored in a template named Building Blocks.dotx. This template is found in one of the application installation folders created when you installed Word e.g., C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\Document Parts\<localID> (where localID is a number representing the local language. Mine is 1003 respresenting U.S. English). This is the orginal distribution template and should not be modified. During installation a parrallel folder containing the Building Blocks.dotx template is created in Documents and Settings\*UserName*\Application Data\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\<localID>. The exact location of your Building Blocks.dotx templates will be determined by your installation path and user name. The Building Blocks.dotx template in the parrallel Documents and Settings folder is the (working) Building Blocks template and the default "Save in" template whenever you attempt to create a new building block. The working template isn't loaded until you attempt to acccess your building blocks by clicking on a gallery control or the organizer. This accounts for the intial short delay displaying building blocks on first use in a Word session. Sometimes the working template can be corrupted. When this happens you can delete the working template and then close and restart Word. When Word restarts, a new working template is created from the original distribution template.

Did you delete the working copy that is in your user profile? Note in so doing you will lose any building blocks you are created and saved to that template.
