Default Greek letter phi not included in MS 2010

Hi, I'm working on a phD and have quite a lot of figures, eqs., etc that use the lower case greek letter phi (which i will refer to as phiA), with a full slash through the circle, not the other which has a circle turning into the bottom of the slash (phiB), without a slash above the circle. I had this option in previous versions of word where I was able to insert symbol, find the lower case phiA, and insert it, which I don't see in my new MS2010. Incidentally, when I load a document built in MS 2007/2003, etc, all of my lower case phis are displayed as a small black rectangle, suggesting that the character does not exist in my font set. I can still insert the phiB using insert symbol, but that would mean that I would have to go back and redesign all of my charts to display the other phi, which would be a real pain. Is there a way to add the other lowercase phi from my old symbol set into the new MSwords symbol set so that I may use it in the future?

Hi TurboEnginerd

Both these characters are available in just about any font. The upper-case phi (Φ) is character 03A6 and the lower case phi (φ) is character 03C6. To get either of these, simply type the code then press Alt-x. If this doesn't work for you, you may have some faulty font installations. If it does work but it's not showing up in your transferred documents, that's probably because your documents used a non-standard font set. I am aware of some font sets that allow you to input character pairs that they display as greek characters. These are not part of the standard windows font set and you would have to reinstall them before your documents would display & print correctly - or you could do a Find/Replace to change these character pairs into the standard font equivalents. The latter makes the document more portable too.

Default Use the "symbol" font instead

Hey TurboEnginerd, the "symbol" font has the phi you speak of.
