Using Numbering for Manually Numbered Text

Hello,
If this is a re-post, excuse me. I couldn't find any post for this.
I've a document that has nearly 300 elements to be numbered. There are tables/text/images between elements to be numbered. Numbering has only one level, no indentation needed.
I'm generating this document via a automation tool: http://docx.codeplex.com/

It doesn't support numbering/bullets, so I've appended numbers in increasing order. I've tried to generate ToC(Table of Contents) from this but as I expect it needs document to have numbering.

My main aim is to generate ToC for this document. I think best option is generating an ms-word-style numbering but I'm open to any advice(including macro or programming).

Don't see the attachment and don't know codeplex … but as long as the elements to be numbered all use the same style, shouldn't you be able to update that style to use autonumbering?

I've added attachment now. In fact docX doesn't matter. I've a docx document like the attached one and I need to apply numbering to get a ToC. Do you have any idea for that?

As you can see, these are all depending on using Styles for different elements in a document. If your elements are set for given styles, you can number them sequentially - either single or multi-level.

Otherwise, you could insert SEQ fields to number them. That is older technology and might fit your needs better. To do this, in your source document you would put some unique character combination (i.e. xxyxxyxx) every place you want a sequential number. Then replace that unique combination with a SEQ field throughout your document and you will have sequential numbers.

Charles, after a half hour of looking up fields, I'm still stumped. For the Find box, Special has a Field option, but Replace does not. Therefore, how does one replace xyxy with a field?

Insert your first SEQ field manually. i.e. { SEQ myNum }

Select and Copy it (Ctrl-C)

Ctrl-H to get replace.

Type your search phrase xyxy in the Find box.

Type ^c in the Replace box (clipboard contents)

Click on Replace All.

I (always) agree with anything John McGhie says about numbering!

BTW I forgot to mention that after you do the replace, you need to do Ctrl-A and then press the F9 key to update the fields.
