Default heading/paragraph justification issue

I am having an issue in word 2007 that i cant seem to fix.

I have a document that has numerous heading and paragraphs.
I want the heading for the section centered on the page but the following paragraph justified to the left.
The problem is if i highlight either the heading or the paragraph and change the justification , it affects the other as well.
it makes no difference how many spaces i put between , each heading/paragraph affect the other when changed.
Im stumped.
Thanks for any ideas
