Often when I am typing in Word, typing slows to a crawl. Instead of inputting the letters immediately on the screen, it displays them letter by letter, about a second per letter, so that it takes a minute to display a sentence and I can't go on and type something else or correct my typos. What causes this and what can I do about it? I take it it is a memory issue but I don't have many applications or files open.

That sounds like the kind of behaviour that occurs on slow systems when virus checkers etc are scanning the system.
