Default Word automatically resizing

I'm having a frustrating problem in Word 2003. I pasted some pictures into a new Word doc (no text in the doc, just pictures). I use the Print Layout view and when i look at the doc, the pages don't show up at the right size. They are automatically resized to fit the picture. In other words, if i pasted a picture that's 6" x 6" into a new page, i don't see the letter-sized page with the picture in it, i see a 6" tall shortened page that's just big enough for the picture.

However, if i print that page, it does print correctly (i.e. it prints a 6" x 6" picture on the letter-sized paper.)

How do i get this document to view correctly so that i can see how much white space is going to be on the final print?? I've been using Word for years and have never had this problem.
