Default TOC - Help with custom page numbering...

Could someone please take a look at this linked .doc?

I need to update the TOC of the above document but when I do (f9), I loose the original TOC format. It's important to my employer to maintain the page numbers on the right hand side of the TOC... Section#,article#,pg. #.

I've been racking my brains trying to get the TOC to refresh as it was originally authored, but everything I try it just gives me page numbers.

What's the trick?

Hi RebelRoundEye,

A TOC can only maintain page naumbers as they are formatted in the body of the document. You can't edit the TOC and have the edits preserved through an update.

I suspect the original document had the page numbering in the page footers formatted to include the chapter number. Your current document does not have that - the '1.1 pg' etc strings are simply typed into the frame that holds the page numbers and are not part of the actual page number formatting. And, before you can include the chapter numbers in the page numbering, you have to set the document up for that. For more info, see:

Default Thanks, Paul

Yes, I suspected this was the case after doing more research on my own... and I was able to sleep well knowing this. Your reply came to me this morning and gave me the confidence to return to my employer today with a concise and detailed answer.

Thank you very much for the information and your reply.
