Finding a problem font
Acrobat PDF conversion of Word 2003 fails on a document created with cut and paste from a WordPerfect 7 document. There's nothing reported by the PDF conversion, and checking with Adobe's support, it was suggested I print the document with "Adobe PDF" as the printer. That at least results in clues, and apparently it choking because of a WP font; WP MathA.
The problem? I can't find any characters using WP MathA font in the document. I used Find, with the Format button set for Font>WP MathA, and ^? for any character, ^# for any digit, and ^$ for any letter, and nothing is found. What do ya'll suggest to find the offending font? The logfile from print: %%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%% %%[ Error: WP-MathA cannot be embedded because of licensing restrictions. ]%% %%[ Font vendor (WPCO) does not permit this font to be embedded in PDF. ]%% [Warning] The font WP-MathA could not be embedded because of licensing restrictions. Text may display incorrectly on platforms that do not have this font installed. %%[Page: 1]%% %%[ Error: invalidfont; OffendingCommand: show; ErrorInfo: CharOffsets %%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%% %%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %% |

Hi Rick,
You should be able to do a Find for the WP-MathA font without specifying anything for the find text. Note that the font name must be specified correctly. And, if you're pasting content such as this, you might find it advantageous to use Paste Special > Unformatted Text. That way, all font attributes are discarded.

Hi,
I have resolved this problem with this link: http://www.edaboard.com/thread80937.html The thing is to uninstall old WP fonts and to install new version fonts from Corel by going to WPFonts.exe. Download the file, execute (they unzip the fonts) and install new fonts with control panel. And that's all!! Regards, Ricard |

Hi Ricard,
That solution suggests the new version of the WP MathA font doesn't have the licensing restrictions that the old one had. However, thatt doesn't really address the issue of why a document that you say didn't use the font might have such a problem in the first place. Ultimately, since its a WP font, the implication is that some or all of the document was created with WP and, following importation into Word, some subsequent clean-up work hasn't been done.

Hi Macropod,
this problem with WP fonts is a bug in printing a pdf in some versions of Acrobat (http://www.inera.com/acrobat7.shtml). Old versions of WP fonts had licensing restrictions (historical purposes), but now, new versions have been released and work properly. Regards!! |

No, it's not a bug - it was a licensing restriction (exactly as the Adobe error message said), which the newer version of the font doesn't have. New fonts can (and sometimes do) have similar licensing restrictions.
I'm glad you got the problem sorted, but from all you've said it seems you still might not have removed the offending WP MathA font from the document.
