Default Add Google anylitics code to Word Doc

I have a word document saved as an htm file on a website. I would like to add Google analytics tracking code to this. Please could someone tell me how to do this. I have the same question re an Excel document which I presume will be a similar answer. I am using Office 2007. Thanks

Hi Hexasphere,

Neither Word nor Excel are web development applications. If you want anything more than the basics, use a proper web development application like FrontPage or its sucessor, Expression Studio.

Thanks Paul. Are you saying that if I use a web development tool I can still publish Excel sheets on my website using the suggested tools and insert tracking code into the Excel or word documents? My objective is to try to see how many people actually look at the sheets of data which are published on my web site.

Thanks for taking the time to answer

H

Hi Hexasphere,

Web development is not my forte. What you're asking for really isn't a Word or Excel question (or even an Office question). Tracking how often a particular file has been downloaded is one thing, which your website code should be able to do fairly easily (even this forum tracks how often a given thread is viewed and a posted file is downloaded); trying to track how often it's opened afterwards is another thing altogether. If you try to implement the latter, be prepared for a significant backlash.

Just to clarify. The word/Excel document is saved to htm. What I want to do is access the Html text of the Word strock Excel document using Word or Excel as the editing tool and insert the tracking code into the html word/excel header. Do you know if this is possible?

Thanks once again for your time

Hi Hexasphere,

I have no idea what might or might not be possible in that regard. Since there seems to be no facility for doing that kind of thing from within Word or Excel themselves, it comes back to a question of editing the HTML files - for which you'll need an HTML editor at least.
