Default Question about headings and numberings

Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to glue my thesis chapters together and its proving to be more difficult than I thought, at least in terms of formatting.

I would like my document organized as follows:

Supervisors
Table of Contents
Dedications
Chapter 1
1.1 Heading 2
1.1.1 Heading 3
Chapter 2
2.1 Heading 2
2.2 Heading 2
Chapter 3

etc.
Appendix
Bibliograph

What I am finding is the numbering gets mixed up in the chapters. Specifically, I get something like
Chapter 1
1.1 Heading 2
1.1.1 Heading 3
1.2 Heading 2
Chapter 2
1.3 Heading 2
1.4 Heading 2
Chapter 3
etc.

I can restart the numbering at the second level, but this does not change the first number, which should correspond with the chapter number. Heading 1 is not numbered, but if I can it to being numbered, then so do the headings "Table of Contents", "Dedications", etc., which I don't want to be numbered. If you have any ideas as I how I might be able to do this I would really appreciate it (or tell me that it is not possible).

Thanks,

Chris
