Caption Text Entry Disabled?!?
Hi all,
I am need of a Word guru to help me debug this issue. I have been learning about captions as I've had enough of trying to manage figure numbers and cross-references manually! If I create a fresh document (Word 2010) I can add captions and create the table of figures no worries. However I have a bunch of policy docs and want to add in a table of figures but when I right click on the image and select 'Insert Caption" the caption text field is disabled. It's not greyed out, you just can't click inside it. Also I noticed that Word normally defaults to label type 'Figure' and places the text 'Figure 1' inside that field but it is blank. Can anyone help me sort this out? Thank you. |

I have the same issue, but I did not see anything in the paragraph formatting window (or any of the formatting windows) that could possibly enable or disable the text box. What am I missing? Thank you, AB |

Nevermind, I figured out that the caption style is formatted to be centered. The text box is NOT disabled, I simply cannot see what I am typing in the text box because it is centered.
Thank you, Alicia |

This post saved my ass today. I thought Word sensed that I have a deadline to attend to and quit on me.

I don't know what I missed here, but I don't see a solution to "...[I] want to add in a table of figures but when I right click on the image and select 'Insert Caption" the caption text field is disabled. It's not greyed out, you just can't click inside it."
The caption field is blank (when previously it was pre-populated) and I can't click in it or select it. Any ideas? Going loco here... -B |

Oh sweet mercy- if the caption paragraph formatting is "center aligned" then it doesn't show up in the input field. That's ridiculous. I about had an aneurysm over this stupid thing.

Any screenshots to better understand the issue?

Clarification
Jamal,
is the same issue like earlier - cannot edit the caption if the caption style is "centered". Is a bug in Word 2013. Thank you for your post, this issue drived me crazy for more than one hour before googling your answer. |

Thanks very much. I had my caption style set to 'Right justify' by a slip of the mouse, and it was like I was not able to click into the caption text box at all. Thanks to this forum I realised why.
I see that one can also produce the same result (the apparent inability to type into the text box) by for example increasing the size of the font to say 24. I see no reason why this text input box should reflect the paragraph and font settings at all, bearing in mind it can not display them. Thanks again. |
