Hi Jamal,

First off, I'd suggest checking that the Style definition is correct as to the font and its attributes especially, including the character space settings. Something might have gone awry. Check that the Heading 1 font hasn't corrupted (eg does the same font work elsewhere in the document).

Hi Jamal,

It appears your document's multilevel list numbering has become corrupt. What you can do to retrieve the situation is to insert a new last paragraph into your document, then copy and paste everything except that new last paragraph into a new document. That should fix the problem. If so, you can close the old document and save the new one over it.

Thank you Paul

- what do you mean by "insert a new last paragraph"? does it mean that i need to TYPE a paragraph in the last lines of the last page in the old document? (why we are doing this step?)

- if so, copying and pasting the contents of the corrupted file holds the problem into the new file (attached). !!!

- Did you try this method on the sample file that i have sent? did it work?

Jamal

By the way, how to copy and past the footer and header of some file to another file with exactly the same format and margin settings? what is the professional way to do this?

thank you

I mean, go to the end of the document and press the Enter key. You do it this way because the file's 'metadata' starts immediately after the last paragraph mark. If you copy that, you get the corrupt 'metadata' as well.

Yes, I tried it on the sample you posted and it appeared to work.

Except for, perhaps the last Section, all the headers/footers & page layout should transfer seamlessly. You may need to fix the last Section's headers/footers & page layout .

Thank you Paul.

It didn't work with me.

the problem in the heading 1 is copying itself in all the new file i go!!!!! further, a lot of editing work is needed when i copy and past the content of the corrupted file to a new one!!!

I'm wondering why the heading 1 can't be reset!!!

I'm loosing all the setting and the format in the ordinal file!!!!!!

very confusing and frustrating!

regards

Jamal

Hi Jamal,

The problem isn't with your Heading 1, but with the document's List numbering system.

Another way you could try to fix things is to save the document as an RTF file, then close & re-start Word. When the RTF file is re-opened, that sometimes fixes things.

What genius solution is this Paul...
i converted the file to rtf then back to docx and it did work

now, i couldn't know why i have a tab after the heading "Chapter 1" although the tab is set to be ZERO (attached)

what might be the reason?

regards

Jamal

Hi Jamal,

You should be able to delete that tab (or change it to a space) via the List Numbering dialogue. The reason you can't see it in the tabs dialogue is that it's part of the list numbering and not part of the paragraph format.

Hi Paul,

I'm sorry, but the problem is there again!!! heading 1 is replaced by a black mark (attached)

what's strange that the rest of this heading system is working very well. and even the appearance on the "browse the heading in your documents" shows heading 1 as it is!!!!!!!! correct!

should i do the same each time i have this problem?
what is the reason for this problem so that i can avoid it?

regards

Jamal

Hi Jamal,

You could got through the same process again, but this seems to be only a temprorary fix. Maybe your document has some underlying corruption that the process is unable to fix completely. In that case, what you may need to do is to create a new document and copy everything except the heading 1 paragraphs into it. For the heading 1 paragraphs, you could convert them to 'normal' style before copying, then convert them back to heading 1 afterwards, or you could copy just the text from them and paste them into the heading one Style in the new document.

Hi Paul,

I’m again in trouble with the same issue,

The number of “heading 2” is replaced by black background! The file is attached

What might be the issue?

What reasons are behind such corruption?

Thank you

Best

Jamal
